Sewing Mermaid - Our Story

Our Story - Sewing Mermaid

Our Story – The Beginning

Our story begins in 2012, before Sewing Mermaid, when I bought my first sewing machine. I couldn’t tell you now exactly why bought it, just that I like to try my hand at any kind of crafting. I bought my first pattern (a handbag), scraps of fabric from the discount bin at Wal-Mart, and began my first sewing adventure. At that time I had no clue what I was doing and there wasn’t much on YouTube at that time so I just had to figure it out. Trough a lot of trial and error, I made my first bag. It wasn’t pretty, but I was proud. I carried that bag for a couple of years – strings dangling, uneven stitches, crooked pockets. To me it was beautifully imperfect but I was so proud. Surprisingly it lasted until 2021 when I finally retired it. Unfortunately for my bag making hobby I switched careers and put the Brother away for about 6 years or so.

Our Story – The Juicy Bits

In 2016 I found out I was expecting again while going through a divorce and needed to be frugal so I decided to pull that Brother sewing machine out again, blew off the dust, and learn how to make spit rags and diaper liners. I made a few and put the machine up again. At that point I was a mom of 3 boys. This is where it gets exciting for me. In 2017 I found out I was pregnant again. This time it’s a beautiful little girl. Finally, a GIRL. Now it’s time to make all the pretty things. There will be no blue! So, I pulled out the Brother machine again. My goal was to learn how to make cloth diapers, cute dresses, cute everything. I did, but then I went back into “I want to learn how to sew more things” mode. After joining some inspiring Facebook groups and watching numerous YouTube videos, I learned all the things.

The End?

No, this is just the beginning. Here I am today in 2022 with a brand new Juki industrial sewing machine and more patterns and fabric than I know what to do with. After a great deal of  soul searching I’ve decided I can’t keep everything I make and it’s time to start sharing my hobby with anyone who enjoys handmade products and supporting small businesses, like Sewing Mermaid. My favorite things to make are toddler/infant size shorts, wallets, and purses. The smaller projects are the ones I enjoy working on most. I want to especially thank Thomas and my family/friends for encouraging me to keep making and telling me that it’s time to start selling. Join me on my journey and let my passion for making become your unique handmade products

At Sewing Mermaid, we strive to make high quality, one of a kind handmade bags, purses, totes, etc. We’ve come a long way on our journey, and here you are! We’re excited that your journey has crossed paths with ours.  We look forward to welcoming you and your family to our family. Cheers to a bright future!
