Sashing Layout Options
Standard Sashing
Classic grid pattern with sashing between all blocks and cornerstones at intersections.
Best for: Traditional quilts, samplers
Vertical Only
Vertical strips only between columns. Blocks touch horizontally.
Best for: Modern quilts, fewer pieces
Horizontal Only
Horizontal strips only between rows. Blocks touch vertically.
Best for: Row quilts, strip designs
💡 Tip: This calculator assumes standard sashing (between all blocks). For vertical-only or horizontal-only, adjust the "Blocks Across" or "Blocks Down" to reflect your layout.
Sashing Success Tips:
📐 Planning:
- • Odd numbers of blocks look more balanced
- • Sashing width should complement block size
- • Typical sashing: 1-3" finished width
- • Larger blocks = wider sashing
✂️ Cutting:
- • Cut all strips same length for consistency
- • Label strips (horizontal vs vertical)
- • Cut cornerstones from same strip width
- • Press fabric before cutting
🧵 Sewing:
- • Sew horizontal strips to blocks first
- • Then join rows with vertical sashing
- • Match cornerstone seams carefully
- • Press toward sashing (usually darker)
🎨 Design:
- • Light sashing makes blocks "float"
- • Dark sashing creates frames
- • Scrappy cornerstones add interest
- • Match cornerstones to block centers
